Load a magazine and mix in at least three dummy rounds (have a partner load your magazine for added surprise). Avoid having multiple dummy rounds in a row.
Starting from any position, engage the target until you encounter a dummy round, then perform an immediate action drill (tap-rack-ready) and re-engage.
The "Immediate Action Drill," commonly known as "Tap, Rack, Ready," is an essential malfunction clearance exercise designed to quickly address stoppages in your firearm. In this drill, the shooter starts with their firearm presented on target. When a malfunction is simulated (either through a dummy round or by setting up a failure), the shooter immediately taps the bottom of the magazine to ensure it’s seated, racks the slide to clear the malfunction, and then gets back on target, ready to fire. This drill is critical for building muscle memory and ensuring you can quickly and effectively resolve malfunctions during USPSA competitions.
